How to participate in the RRF NR or join one of the membership organisations

Membership of the RRF NE is composed of groups or organisations that are formed by asylum seekers or refugees in order to provide support or carry out activities that will assist in settlement and integration. This includes groups/organisations at the vary beginning of organising themselves, as well as those organisations who are now well established. These organisations are known as 'refugee-led' and 'self-help' organisations.

Current membership (May 2002) includes the following Refugee Community Organisations (RCO's)
  • ACANE (African Community Advice North East)
  • African Women's Group
  • Bosnia & Herzegovina Society
  • Central African Community Group
  • Iranian Centre
  • ICANE (Iraqi Community Association North East)
  • LACSA (Latin American Community Support Association)

  • NECAFISI (North East Congolese Association for Integration and Social Inclusion)
  • ReACT (Refugee Advisory Committee on Tyneside)

If you would like to have more information about any of the Refugee Community Organisations who are members of the RRF NE, or are interested in becoming a member and joining in the activities of one of the organisations yourself, please feel welcome to contact the Co-ordinator and details will be sent to you.

New Groups

The RRF NE would like to support the emergence of new refugee-led, self-help organisations. The Government's policy of Dispersal, in operation since April 2000, has created many new communities of asylum seekers and refugees in the North East region. Latest records show that there are now 97 different nationalities of refugees/asylum seekers in the North East region. In addition, world events constantly create new movements of refugees out of their countries, forced to seek safety in the UK. Therefore the emergence of new organisations is a constant process.

If you are an individual, or a group of people who are interested in forming a new group or organisation then please feel welcome to contact the RRF NE co-ordinator. We will be able to provide you with advice, information and on-going support on how to build up your organisation and organise activities for your community.

In addition, if you work for other community, voluntary and statutory sector organisations and know of asylum seekers/refugees wishing to self-organise, please refer them to the Co-ordinator for advice, information, support and inclusion in the RRF NE network.
