Summary of this report

  1. As at the End of September 2007 there were 4242 asylum seekers in the North East receiving either subsistence only support or in NASS accommodation. This is an increase of 244 from the end of June 2007 (3998).  

 2. At the end of September 2007 there were 4211 asylum seekers in the North East in NASS accommodation, an increase of 249 (+6.28%) from June 2007. 1583 (37.59%), were living in Newcastle [Page 4 and 5].  

 3. At the end of September 2007 there were 31 asylum seekers receiving subsistence only support, a decrease -13.89% from June 2007. 13 (41.93%), were living in Newcastle [page 4] NECARS figures).  

 4. The main nationalities of asylum seekers in the North East are Iranian (11.24), Iraqi (9.81%), Zimbabwean (6.91%). [Page 6] (NECARS figures).  

 5. The total number of asylum seekers in the UK who are supported by NASS (The National Asylum Support Service) is 48,470, a decrease of 1% from the previous quarter.  Greater London has the largest number with 8,700 followed by Yorkshire and Humberside 7,785 [Page 7&8] (Home Office figures).  

 6. 5,890 Asylum applications in the quarter nationally ( United Kingdom ) this was 18.99% higher than the previous quarter, (4,950).  The main countries of origin were “ Peoples Republic of China ” (10.95%), the “ Eritrea ” (9.42%) and “The Republic of Iraq” (9%) [Page 9]. Applications from the “Islamic Republic of Afghanistan fell from 565 to 475 (15.93%) between Q2 2007 and Quarter 3 2007 in the same period applications from the “ Peoples Republic of China rose from 505 to 645 (27.72%). [Page 9] (Home Office figures).  

 7. The number applying for NASS support nationally was 4,145, an increase of +9.08 from the previous quarter. The main nationalities applying for NASS support were Iran (12.67%), Iraq (11.22%), Eritrea (8.68%) and Somalia (9.6%). [Page 10] (Home Office figures).                                                                                                                                                             

 8. A total of 5,230 asylum applications received initial decisions, -11.88% lower than the previous quarter.  The number awaiting a decision was 4,800; it was 4,500 at the End of June 2007 and was 6000 at the end of September 2006.  17% of initial decisions were granted asylum in Q3 2007 [Page 11] (Home Office figures).

 9. Successful applications for Section 4 (‘Hard Case’) in Q3 2007 1,475 ; -9.79% lower than previous quarter – with the largest group being Iraqis [Page 12] (Home Office figures).

 10.  3,720 appeals were received in Q3 2007, -2.87% lower than previous quarter (3,830) and 5,000 appeals were ongoing, the same as Q2. [Page 13] (Home Office figures).

 11.  51,100 applications received in countries in the EU27; in the 3rd Quarter 2007 (July-September). Figures for all countries were not available at time of publication [Page 14] (Home Office figures).

Asylum statistics for 2001

  • Overall there was an 11% drop in asylum application in 2001. The overall number of people applying for asylum was 71,700.
  • The numbers applying asylum in-country was 46,200, a drop of 15% since 2000.
  • The numbers applying at the port of entry was 25,500, a drop of 2% from 2000.
  • It is estimated that 31% of asylum seekers received a positive decision in 2001, a figure of 22,227.
Asylum statistics for 2000
  • The number of asylum applications for 2000 was 80,315 (excluding dependants), a 13% increase in applications since 1999.
  • The increase in 2000 was the smallest percentage increase for three years.
  • Including dependants, the number of asylum applications for 2000 was estimated to be 98,900.
  • The proportion of applications made in-county (by people already in the UK) rather than on arrival was 68% in 2000, compared with 59% in 1999 and 50% in 1998.
  • 2,733 unaccompanied children (aged 17 or under) applied for asylum in the UK in 2000.
  • Of this 2,733, 1, 394 were made at port and 1,339 were made in country
  • Of the initial decisions made in 2000 under normal procedures, 10,375 (11%) were to recognize the applicant as a refugee and grant asylum. 11,495 (12%) were not granted refugee status, but were granted exceptional leave to remain. 75, 7680 (78%) were refused asylum or exceptional leave to remain.
