Youth Integration Project

YIP Tees Valley (Middlesbrough, Stockton , Darlington, Redcar and Cleveland and Hartlepool )

YIP supported the Redcar and Cleveland Refugee families Association to create a project which would involve both parents and young people. The project is called Moving Onwards By Involving Learning for Everyone (MOBILE).  So far the following activities were delivered under the project.

  • Bollywood & Bhangra Dance Session.
  • Yoga Sessions
  • Family outings

  • In the summer YIP supported young refugees to set up a football team which had several friendly matches against similar teams in the region. The team is now working to get into local tournament. YIP believes that sport is one of the best methods of integration as this proven to be the case with the newly formed team
  • YIP Tees Valley encourages the involvement of young people on different levels /themes of Local Strategic Partnerships. In line to this YIP delivers training on the LSP structures and opportunities of involvement.
  • YIP disseminates information on local, regional and national events and ensures young refugees representation.

Some examples are:

v    Multicultural Fashion Show Extravaganza (2 December 06)

v    Middlesbrough Youth Festival (26 November 06)

v    AIDS/HIV awareness Training (25 November 06)

v    Cultural Fest (4 November 06)

v    Taste of Africa (6 October 06)

  • YIP Tees Valley hosted a young advocate from Changemakers who developed a project of her own called Drum Majorettes group. Young advocate had been supported by YIP to make a funding application and received £1000 from the Big Boost (Lottery Fund)
  • YIP has taken young people to a week long youth music theatre residential ( Youth Music Theatre UK ) in Manchester . A multicultural group of 30 young people from different parts of the UK worked together towards a performance at the end of the week. The young people developed the storyline, wrote the songs and developed dancing, singing and performing skills. They all enjoyed the experience, made new friends and learnt new skills.
  • YIP Tees Valley in conjunction with YIP Tyneside and Wearside have recently organised a three day residential at Kielder Forest , Northumberland. There were 21 young people from the region who benefited from the residential. At the residential young people participated in different outdoor activities such as Orienteering, Climbing, Canoeing, Bell boating, Mask making etc. They have also visited the Bird of Prey Centre. Young people learnt new skills, built their confidence and self esteem. Young people from the residential formed a new regional group called Together Integration Experiences (T.I.E).  The T.I.E is looking forward to organising a social event to meet up again, as this was one of their many future plans. The group very much welcomes new members, 16-25 years olds.
