Youth Integration Project

Tyneside (Gateshead, Newcastle and North Tyneside )

  • Over the summer of 2006 YIP, Mobex and Newcastle City Council ran a series of adventure days including rock climbing, mountain biking, gorge walking, canoeing, swimming sessions and more. If you would like to join our Boys and Girls Star Team from 11-19 to undertake future activities like these contact YIP Tyneside worker (details below)
  • The YIP project has also ran joint adventure days with County Durham Social Services CATS team doing coasteering and canoeing. Activities involved a mix of young people from the YIP project and young people who were referred by County Durham Social Services. This provided an excellent opportunity to widen integration to communities further afield.
  • Refugee week saw two 30 minute performances staged by Mongrel UK , involving a group of 10 young people from different backgrounds. The performances tackled issues facing young people and were facilitated by workers from The Sage, Gateshead . The youth music workshops were due to continue from September 2006. If you’d like to know more or get involved then call YIP Tyneside worker.
  • YIP has also been supporting Crunk, a monthly nightclub for under 18’s. This is run in partnership with Streetwise and is a safe way to meet other young people and have fun through music. The programme is organised by the Crunkers, a group of 4 young people from both the host community and young refugees. We are always looking for people who want to become Crunkers so why not give Melisa a ring to volunteer or to find out when is the next Crunk event.
  • The football project is now underway, in partnership with Hat-trick (a joint initiative between Newcastle New Deal for Communities and the Football Association).  We meet every Thursday at 7 pm at Nunsmoor Park (towards the right side of the park when you are facing the BBC studios). Give us a ring or just turn up prepared to play football. lving a group of 10 young people from different backgrounds. • YIP has taken young people to a week long youth music theatre residential ( Youth Music Theatre UK ) in Manchester . A multicultural group of 30 young people from different parts of the UK worked together towards a performance at the end of the week. The young people developed the storyline, wrote the songs and developed dancing, singing and performing skills. They all enjoyed the experience, made new friends and learnt new skills.

  • If English is not your first language and you would like to get some help with your homework, studying, conversation, grammar skills or filling in application forms YIP and the Student Action for Refugees (STAR) can find a person to help you.  Please contact the YIP Tyneside worker.
  • YIP and Millennium Volunteers help young people to find volunteering opportunities, such as helping your community, doing awareness raising about issues affecting asylum seekers and refugees, working in different organisations, or just building on what you are good at e.g. football, drama etc.  You will also get a Millennium Volunteer certificate.
