Providing support and information for all asylum seekers and refugees and operating the North East One Stop Service contract
  • NERS welcomes new arrivals, helps them through the bewildering initial period of adjustment, and supports them as they begin to rebuild their lives in a strange land
  • New arrivals need help with the legal requirements of registering with the authorities, seeking housing, obtaining the very basic benefits to which they are entitled and dealing with strange customs in a strange language. New arrivals often come with only the clothes in which they stand, in urgent need of food, shelter, and medical treatment
  • Refugees need on-going support for various scenarios, like family reunions, renewal of documents and change of circumstances.
Campaigning for a better understanding of Refugee issues in the UK
  • NERS believes there is a fundamental misconception amongst large parts of the UK population surrounding refugee issues. This is aided by negative and sometimes factually incorrect media stories.
  • NERS seeks to redress the misconceptions surrounding refugees through promoting positive images of refugees in the community and local and central government
  • NERS seeks to highlight the UK obligations towards the on-going protection of asylum seekers and refugees under international conventions.
  • NERS works with other refugee organizations to promote refugee issues nationally
